KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WACH) - An Elgin Town Councilman was arrested by Kershaw County deputies Wednesday.
Sheriff Jim Matthews says Norman Allen "Bubba" Ernst, 41, was arrested on a warrant charging him with malicious injury to property.
According to Matthews, Ernst was leasing property to a gun range, but wanted to close the business because he said noise from the range was interfering with his business. He eventually obtained an eviction notice, which was served on the range operator.
Authorities say five acts of vandalism were reported before the eviction notice was served. A witness who allegedly observed the acts taking place, who did not know Ernst, picked him out of a SLED photo lineup as a suspect.
Matthews says Ernst has previous arrests dating back to 2001, several of which were dismissed and has convictions for drugs, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and unlawful use of a telephone. He will remain at the Kershaw County Detention Center until a bond has been set.
