FLORENCE COUNTY -- 233 pounds of pure cocaine, individually packaged and hidden in furniture inside a tractor-trailer... That's what Florence County sheriff's deputies found when they stopped the semi on Interstate 95 Thursday morning.
During the stop, a drug sniffing canine alerted on the trailer, which was registered to a moving company out of Florida.
According to narcotics investigators, the street value of the cocaine seized is conservatively estimated at over $10,000,000. "This is the largest cocaine seizure by our agency ever," Sheriff Kenney Boone stated. "We take seriously our role in the war on drugs, and the news of this seizure will be heard all the way to South America. Hats off to our deputies for their splendid work on this case."
The driver of the tractor-trailer and the passenger were released because deputies say they had no idea what they were hauling.
The Florence office of the Drug Enforcement Administration was brought in to help following the seizure.
