DJJ places three employees on suspension after detainee takes own life

Three Department of Juvenile Justice employees have been placed on suspension after a 16-year-old hanged himself while detained at the department over the weekend.

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - Three Department of Juvenile Justice employees have been placed on suspension after a 16-year-old hanged himself while detained at the department over the weekend.

Alan C. Cottrell, of Pelzer, was being held in detention on an adult charge of burglary in the first degree, according to Loretta Neal, a spokesperson for the department.

Neal says DJJ has initiated an immediate internal investigation of this incident.

"Any time a young person dies it is a tragedy, especially under circumstances like this," said Neal. "DJJ extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of the young man."

The State Law Enforcement Division continues to investigate.
