Dorn VA Medical Center: Missing laptop contained personal information of nearly 7,500 veterans

Authorities say a laptop containing personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers, was reported missing from a locked testing lab in the Respiratory Therapy department on February 11.

COLUMBIA (WACH) - The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center is offering free credit monitoring to the nearly 7,500 veterans whose information may have been breached after a laptop went missing in February.

Authorities say a laptop containing personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers, was reported missing from a locked testing lab in the Respiratory Therapy department on February 11.

A statement from the medical center says 7,405 veterans will be notified, and one year of free credit monitoring will be offered to those affected as a precaution.

The investigation is ongoing and officials say there is no indication the information has been misused. The laptop has not been recovered.

Veterans who have questions or concerns about whether their personal information may have been involved can call the Dorn VA Privacy Officer, Lisa Boxton, at (803) 776-4000 extension 7692.
