      Ex-Pentagon chief Gates addressing USC graduates

      COLUMBIA (AP) -- Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates addressed graduates of the University of South Carolina Friday.

      Gates, who also served as the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, addresses graduates at the university's Friday afternoon ceremony.

      Gates is also receiving an honorary degree of doctor of public service. The ceremony includes students from the Darla Moore School of Business, the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy and the School of Public Health.

      Gates became defense secretary in 2006 under President George W. Bush and continued under President Barack Obama until retiring in June 2011.
