Exhibit of civil rights photos, "Defying the Quiet," opens at USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- An exhibit of photographs taken during the struggle for civil rights in South Carolina is going on display at the University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum

The show called "Defying the Quiet" opens Friday and is on display through Jan. 17. It is free and open to the public.

The display features photos from Cecil Williams, David Wallace and the staff photographers of The State newspaper. It includes images of protests, marches, and bombings, as well as documented interviews of South Carolina students who organized, gathered and stood up against segregation and racial discrimination.

The show displays how the movement was both documented, and hidden, by the city, state agencies and the media.
