KERSHAW COUNTY (WACH) - An early morning crash Monday briefly shut down the southbound side of Highway 601 near Lugoff-Elgin.
Fire crews report that a vehicle came crashing down from the interstate 20 bridge, landing on the busy road.
"The SUV came off of Interstate 20 westbound, clipped a guard rail beside the interstate before the exit, sailed over the side of the interstate, and landed onto US 601 in the median onto the guard rails upside-down. The patient was the only person in the vehicle and was the only injury," Lugoff Fire-Rescue Chief Dennis Ray stated.
Ray says first responders called for a medical helicopter and quickly removed all doors to get the driver out of the vehicle.
â??It took our crews around 10 minutes from the time they began extrication to remove the patient from the SUV until the time the trauma patient was loaded into the LifeNet helicopter. As heavily-traveled as this area is, it is amazing that multiple vehicles were not involved in this crashâ?? Lugoff Fire-Rescue Chief Dennis Ray stated.
The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
