Fire officials: Suspicious package in downtown Columbia not a threat

COLUMBIA (WACH) - A few downtown Columbia streets were closed Monday afternoon as police and fire officials investigated a suspicious item.
Around 6 p.m., Columbia fire officials said the package was not a threat.
Police say the bag contained clothes and miscellaneous items.
A spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department announced around 5 p.m. Monday that Columbia police and the Columbia Fire Department were investigating an item that was found in a shrubbery area at a Laurel Street Church.
Both lanes of Laurel Street between Sumter and Assembly Streets were closed and all lanes on Assembly Street were closed between Blanding and Richland Streets.
All roads are expected to open shortly after 6 p.m.
