COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)-- More than 300 firefighters from all over the state spent their weekend at the South Carolina Fire Academy for the 2012 Southeastern Fire School.
The South Carolina Fire Academy is one of the top three fire training facilities in the nation.
The school offers in classroom sessions and hands on training.
Throughout the weekend, students were able to participate in mock situations, such as building fires and car accidents.
Firefighters attending the optional weekend training have different levels of experience. Some are in their first year of service and others are Chiefs.
Academy Superintendent Shane Ray says the training they provide helps firefighters better serve their community.
"So far this year, unfortunately, we've had two firefighters that have died in the line of duty and some public safety officers as well. It's been a tragic year for us already, and we want to do everything we can, training and education wise, to help prevent those events," said Ray.
