Former Brookland-Cayce football coach dies from cancer

Former Brookland-Cayce Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Abby Bray passed away Thursday night after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

CAYCE, SC (WACH)--The West Columbia and Cayce communities mourned the loss of one of their own Friday.

Former Brookland-Cayce Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Abby Bray passed away Thursday night after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Bray was the Bearcat Head Coach from 2007-2010. He also taught at B-C for more than 20 years. He later went on to serve as a West Columbia City Councilman.

Lexington School District Spokesman Jim Hinton said the school honored Bray Friday. Students wore t-shirts and put signs around the school remembering an adult they considered a role model.

"The kids always knew he cared about them," Hinton said. "He worked hard for the kids and he had a smile on his face constantly. You could always talk with him."

Hinton said a visitation is scheduled at the Brookland-Cayce High School cafeteria Saturday from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

Bray's funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church in Cayce.
