Former Columbia councilman now in prison

SALTERS, SC (WACH) -- Columbia's longest serving councilman is now serving prison time in Williamsburg County.

E.W. Cromartie II reported to Federal Correctional Institution Williamsburg this week. He was sentenced to 366 days for tax evasion in October. Cromartie was also ordered to pay a $58,000 fine.

"We believe it was important that he go to jail," explained U.S. Attorney Mark Moore at the time of sentencing. "We believe that sends a message that no matter who you are, if you commit a crime you should be punished."

Cromartie pleaded guilty in April to one count of income tax evasion and two counts of aggravated structuring.

FCI Williamsburg is located off Highway 521 and is a medium security prison.
