COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The political career of former South Carolina Gov. John C. West is the focus of a new exhibit at the University of South Carolina Hollings Library.
Herbert Hartsook is the director of the Columbia's library's political collections and says the exhibit opens Thursday. It includes many documents on West's work and life, including a personal diary.
Author Phil Grose was to discuss his biography of West, who served as governor from 1971 to 1975 and U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1977 to 1981.
Hartsook says West reorganized the governor's office, was able to push through mandatory car insurance, worked on coastal zone planning and helped establish a second medical school at the University of South Carolina.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
