      Fort Jackson celebrates Independence Day

More than 10,000 soldiers going through basic training at the fort got to enjoy a little free time themselves, packing Hilton Field to take part in the music food and fireworks.

FORT JACKSON, SC (WACH) -- Thousands drove out to Fort Jackson Thursday evening to participate in the Independence Day celebration there.

More than 10,000 soldiers going through basic training at the fort got to enjoy a little free time themselves, packing Hilton Field to take part in the music food and fireworks.

This year's Independence Day celebration featured music by the 282nd Army Band, a display of soldiers in period uniforms, and a fireworks display to finish off the night.

Officials say the annual event was downsized this year due to sequestration cuts.
