      Gaston man found shot to death inside burning home

      Lexington County Sheriff's Department detectives are working to identify the person or persons who shot Jimmy Lee Helms, 60, multiple times in the upper torso at his home on Blackville Road between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday.

      LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) - A 60-year-old man is dead after being shot multiple times Saturday morning near Gaston.

      Lexington County Sheriff's Department detectives are working to identify the person or persons who shot Jimmy Lee Helms, 60, multiple times in the upper torso at his home on Blackville Road between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday.

      Officials say deputies responded around 6:45 a.m. Saturday to a fire at Helms' home. The fire caused extensive damage to the home where Helms' body was found a couch inside.

      Sheriff James R. Metts says it appears that Helms was dead when the fire started. Helms' body was badly burned.

      Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman ruled that Helms' death was a homicide.

      The incident remains under investigation.
