Giant plant will bring almost 2,000 new jobs to Chester County

RICHBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Chester County officials are celebrating after years of failing to land a giant manufacturing plant.

Singapore-based Giti Tire announced last week it will build its first North American plant near Richburg, hiring 1,700 people to make passenger and light truck tires.

Chester County Supervisor Carlisle Roddey told The Herald of Rock Hill that before the June 16 announcement he felt like always the bridesmaid, but never the bride.

Chester County lost out on three major plants in recent years.

South Korean tire maker Hankook went to Clarksville, Tennessee, Japanese tire maker Yokohama chose to build in West Point, Mississippi, and Japanese fiber maker Toray Industries went to Spartanburg.

Chester County Economic Development Director Karlisa Parker says she learned something from each snub that helped the county land Giti Tire.
