Haley's vetoes on the table for lawmakers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH/AP) -- House lawmakers will consider overriding vetoes that shut down two agencies and struck $10 million designated to districts to help pay for mandated teacher salary increases.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell had planned on returning in mid-September. But he decided to call legislators back sooner because of those three vetoes. The Senate returns Wednesday.

The state Arts Commission and Sea Grant Consortium had to close after Haley released her budget vetoes June 6 because she struck all state and federal money for the agencies.

The first-term Republican governor vetoed 81 items from the Legislature's combined budget and reserve spending plans. They represent $67.5 million in state taxes out of $6.8 billion designated by legislators.
