Having a baby? There's an app for that...sort of

City Officials and the FCC get together to discuss a web service aimed to serve new and soon-to-be moms

COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) â?? Are you a new mom, or about to be, in South Carolina and looking for some help along the way? There is an app for that. Sort of.

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin is joining with acting Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn on Monday to discuss text4baby. Officials say the services offers free health and safety text messages with information like helping track pregnancy progress.

Mothers can sign up by texting BABY -- or BEBE for Spanish -- to 511411 and entering their due date or their child's birthday and zip code.

Since its launch in February 2010, more than 583,000 users have enrolled in text4baby nationally, with more than 11,700 in South Carolina.

A luncheon and tour of Children's Garden at College Place United Methodist Church in Columbia are also part of Monday's events.
