The Heller's Creek drowning victim has been identified

NEWBERRY COUNTY (WACH) -- The man who drowned in Heller's Creek in the Pomaria area on Saturday Afternoon has been identified.

The Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton released the name of the victim Christian Eugene Pearson, 43, of Whitmire, SC.

The reported cause of death is asphyxia caused by drowning. SCDNR is handling the investigation around the drowning. No foul play has been suspected.

According to authorities, Pearson was on an outing with family members at the Heller's Creek Recreation area and walked and waded through shallow waters to deeper waters at the bridge on Broad River Rd.

At around 1:30, Pearson began experiencing difficulties and slipped under water. Family members attempted to find and rescue him but were unsuccessful. Divers from SCDNR, Newberry County Water Rescue and Union County Water Rescue found the body near where he slipped from sight a few hours later.
