Sumter,SC (WACH)--Current and former veterans got a helping hand to find a job in the tough economy.
The Hiring our Heroes hiring fair in Sumter brought out hundreds of vets for a variety of jobs Wednesday. Employers ranging from food to retail were in the Gamecock City. Even the Charlotte Police Department were in town looking for a few good officers.
It is the second one held this year. The last one was back in March. This one brought a lot more people.
Ernie Lombardi, with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said veterans bring a lot to the table.
"It is the smart thing to do. These men and women have skill sets that the average American worker does not have. Discipline, teamwork, if you give them a mission, it will be completed."
Marlin Bodison with the State Department of Employment and Workforce; believes it is another way to give back to those transitioning to civilian life after serving.
"It is just us thanking our veterans for their services; and showing them that we are out there trying to help them get re-employed."
The event was sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
