BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (WACH / AP)-- A hostage situation involving an officer at a maximum security prison in the Midlands is over.
State prisons spokesman Clark Newsom says inmates took a guard hostage at the Lee Correctional Institution around 5 p.m. Thursday.
Around 9:45 p.m., Newsom says a team entered the area where the officer was being held by the inmates and rescued him.
The team found the guard in a closet and met no resistance from the inmates.
Newsom says a group of inmates using homemade knives forced the guard into the broom closet.
Newsom says the officer walked out of the area where he was being held on his own, but did have some cuts and other minor injuries. Officials flew him to a local hospital for treatment.
According to investigators, the standoff didnâ??t appear to be organized. During the standoff, some inmates were calling prison officials from cell phones, but never made any demands.
Investigators are now trying to determine what lead up to the standoff.
