LEXINGTON, SC (WACH) -- Hundreds mourned the loss of a Richland County deputy and his wife Tuesday.
A public memorial service was held for Sgt. Derek and Leigh El Dada at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church.
Sheriff Leon Lott says his entire department was devastated by the news of their colleague's death.
Derek El Dada was a dedicated law enforcement officials. He and his wife left behind two teenage daughters.
"They supported each other in their careers -- their hobbies -- but most of all in raising their two beautiful daughters, Hannah and Taylor," said Lott. "They were a team when it came to their children. They both made sure their daughters were taken care of, and they both showered them with love."
Derek and Leigh were killed last Wednesday while riding a motorcycle in Saluda County. Another car had overcorrected after running off the road. That driver crossed the center line and hit the El Dadas.
"Coworkers and their friends -- I see the same pain that I feel in my heart," said Lott at the memorial service. "Like each one of you, this is probably the last place I want to be today."
Derek had written at one point that -- should anything happen to him in the line of duty -- he had three requests.
"Make sure my wife is taken care of and kids' college is squared away, and keep it simple," Lott read. "Well Derek, we are taking care of Leigh, and your girls will always be taken care of by all of us. Rest in peace, my brother."
