An inmate at the Newberry County Detention Center was found dead in his cell yesterday afternoon as a result of an apparent suicide.
Alvin Wayne Ramsey Jr, 25, was found by a correctional during a routine check of the cells. Detention center personnel and medical staff attempted to preform CPR without success. Ramsey was in a cell alone.
Ramsey came into the Newberry County Detention Center charged by the Newberry City Police Department with Petit Larceny on December 5, 2013. When a routine records check was obtained, officers learned that Ramsey was also wanted in Colleton County for a bench warrant for Driving under Suspension.
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said that the cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to hanging. State Law Enforcement Division was called to the scene and will handle the investigation into the incident.
