Inmate who escaped from work site back behind bars

Investigators with the SCDC took Maurice Bailey, 25, into custody just before 9:30 a.m. Monday near the Piney Grove Road area.

COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) - A South Carolina Department of Corrections inmate who escaped from his work site Sunday evening has been captured.

Investigators with the SCDC took Maurice Bailey, 25, into custody just before 9:30 a.m. Monday near the Piney Grove Road area. He was taken to the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia.

Authorities say Bailey went missing from the SCDC Campbell Pre-Release Work Center Sunday around 7 p.m.

Department of Corrections spokesman Clark Newsom says he was supposed to work at a local restaurant that day, but it's not clear whether he ever showed up.

Bailey was serving a five-year sentence for common law robbery. Prior to his escape, his projected release date was September 2013.

      The escape is under investigation.
