COLUMBIA (WACH) â?? Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago has resigned.

City Manager Teresa Wilson says she received his resignation letter Thursday.

Wilson says effective immediately, Major Melron Kelly will serve as Acting Chief for the Columbia Police Department until a new chief is named. Wilson is expected to name a new chief to lead the Department sometime next week.

Santiago was named acting chief last April when then Chief Randy Scott requested a personal leave of absence for an indefinite period of time. Three weeks later Scott resigned and shortly after, Santiago was named interim police chief.
