LAKE MURRAY, SC (WACH) - The Fourth of July is one of the busiest holidays for Lake Murray, and the Richland County Sheriff's Department and other Midlands law enforcement agencies are ready.
Deputy Derek Wilson of RCSD's Marine Patrol says they're coming in full force.
"Our main goal is to be proactive, our main goal is to be vigilant so that it can cut down on whatever crimes or whatever BUI's or what people may think about doing," said Wilson.
Wilson says law enforcement will be keeping a watchful eye on the big crowds of boaters, and performing compliance checks to make sure your boat is fit to be on the water.
"Making sure the vessels have the proper amount of life vests on them. Making sure that the navigation lights are working. Making sure that their 360 light is working," added Wilson. "Also making sure everything on their boat is operational as far as their horns, and making sure they have their fire extinguisher on their boats."
The Richland County Sheriff's Department will be working all weekend to keep you and your family safe during the Fourth of July holiday.
Here are a few safety tips from the department: - Watch your speed while boating.
- Don't boat under the influence.
- Make sure your boat is operational, and most importantly, have proper-fitting life jackets for all occupants on your boat.
