Law Enforcement Officer involved in West Columbia shooting

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - A Lexington County man is dead after an officer involved shooting in West Columbia.

According to Lexington Sheriff James Metts, Deputy Billy Womble arrived at a home on Mineral Springs Road about 1:00 Monday afternoon following reports of gunshots being fired in the area. Once Womble entered the home, Metts says a man inside the house pointed his gun at Womble. Womble then shot the suspect, who later died.

As is standard procedure, SLED was called in to investigate the incident. Womble is on administrative leave while SLED completes their investigation. The Lexington County Sheriff's Department has not released the dead man's identity pending notification of next of kin.
