Law Enforcement to run for Special Olympians

If you see a man running with a flag over his shoulder, know it's for a good cause. Lance Corporal David Spivey, of the SC Bureau of Public Safety, is going to be running across the state of South Carolina from now until October first to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics.

"For every twenty five dollars donated, I'm going to run one mile," says Spivey, who says he draws his inspiration to keep running from the athletes themselves. "They just put so much effort into it, it's amazing."

David Spivey's first torch run for the Special Olympics was a run from the State House steps to Fort Jackson. Monday morning, he was standing again on those same steps as he announced his goal to support travel plans for a delegation of 158 people from South Carolina to the 2010 National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska this July. Spivey himself will be there, running with other officers from across the county in the final leg of a relay to light the Torch of Hope.
