Lawsuit over 2009 Five Points arrest settled for $300,000

Myrtle Beach attorney Jonny McCoy appeared before a judge in 2010 facing criminal charges stemming from a Five Points arrest case in which he says Columbia police lied on their official report.

COLUMBIA (WACH) - The City of Columbia settled a lawsuit on Friday over a controversial Five Points arrest for $300,000.

City officials say a settlement was reached with Myrtle Beach attorney Jonathan David McCoy after he was arrested in October 2009 when he asked officers why they were arrested his friend.

Last week, a federal judge ruled that a city ordinance that makes it illegal to interfere with an officer carrying out an arrest is unconstitutionally vague.

City leaders say they plan on reviewing the future of that ordinance.
