RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- Richland County leaders met Monday to find ways to improve the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
A committee of council members and jail leaders are focusing on three ways life at the jail can improve for the offenders and employees.
First, they are starting a new career ladder to attract guards and keep employees.
Leaders of the detention center say for many years, the jail has been a training ground for guards who leave for neighboring counties that offer higher salaries.
Mental health issues is another problem plaguing the jail. Leaders plan to add another mental health employee who can help give treatment to those who are mentally ill.
An independent study of the jail will also be done by someone with experience in running a detention center similar to Alvin S. Glenn.
