Let's Move Columbia initiative recognized by White House

COLUMBIA (WACH)-On Wednesday, July 10, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine at the White House, celebrating the outstanding efforts of the City of Columbia and other communities to complete health and wellness goals over the past year for Letâ??s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC).

LMCTC calls upon local elected officials to adopt sustainable and holistic strategies that improve access to healthy, affordable food and opportunities for physical activity.

As part of LMCTC, local elected officials are working towards the following goals:

- Goal I:
Start Early, Start Smart:

Promoting best practices for nutrition, physical activity, and screen time in early care and education settings

- Goal II:
My Plate, Your Place:

Prominently displaying MyPlate in all municipal or county venues where food is served

- Goal III:
Smart Servings for Students:

Increasing participation in school breakfast and lunch programs

- Goal

Model Food Service:

Implementing healthy and sustainable food service guidelines that are aligned with theDietary Guidelines for Americans

- Goal V:
Active Kids at Play:

Increasing opportunities for physical activity

The City of Columbia will welcome a two-day bike event on July 30th, July 31st.

â??We are excited that Columbia will be one of the ten cities in the nation to host the 2013 Bike-A-Thon. The primary focus of this event fits well with the Cityâ??s Letâ??s Move Columbia! initiative and our goals for increasing wellness activities for our youth,â?? Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine said.
