Friday evening firefighters battled a Lexington apartment blaze that has left many homeless.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Lexington County Fire Service and Irmo fire services were dispatched to a fire located at the Waterway apartment complex on Northpoint Drive.

When officials arrived they found smoke and flames pouring out of one building.

Onlookers say a plume of smoke could be seen eight miles away.

Crews worked late into the night to put out blaze. Because of that, there is no word on the amount of damage.

Residents WACH Fox news spoke with say a gas grill may have started the fire. Officials say there are no reports of injuries at this time.

Lexington EMS and Lexington Police assisted firefighters.
