Lexington County homicide investigation continues

The home where 72-year-old Robert Lewis Mitchell, Sr. was fatally shot near Gilbert.

COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- Lexington County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate a homicide near Gilbert that happened Saturday morning.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman said preliminary results of an autopsy show that 72-year-old Robert Lewis Mitchell, Sr. died after being shot multiple times in the chest at his home on Juniper Springs Road.

Mitchell was found early Saturday morning by his son, Robert Lewis Mitchell, Jr. who then informed authorities around 9 a.m.

Authorities say it appears Mitchell was shot and killed in the home between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday. He may have been acquainted with the person or persons who shot and killed him.

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said detectives are currently pursuing leads in connection with the identity of the person or persons that shot Mitchell.

According to Metts, robbery might be a motive for the shooting.

No arrests have been made.
