WEST COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- Lexington County deputies hosted a catfish tournament as a reward for children who have been doing community service projects.
Sheriff James Metts says his deputies partnered with House of Praise and Wal-Mart Friday for the tournament in West Columbia.
Metts says leaders of neighborhood watch groups and other community leaders selected participating children. Kids who live at an area children's shelter were also invited to participate.
Eight-year-old Christopher Hernandez won the first place prize with a 16.5 pound catch. Thirteen-year-old Franklin Vasquez came in second, and eight-year-old J.T. Melidor came in third.
Metts says the South Carolina National Guard and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources were also on hand with displays for children.
