Lightning strikes 5 workers in Columbia, one hospitalized

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Five landscapers working outside during thunderstorms Tuesday were struck by lightning, according to officials.

Columbia fire officials say one person was hospitalized with minor injuries after a tree the crew was working under was hit by lightning around 3 p.m.

The strike happened near the Benedict College campus on Allen Benedict Court off Laurel Street.

SkyWACH Weather Anchor Justin Kier says storms pushing through the Midlands will continue to cause severe conditions in the area.

Lightening and strong winds will be the biggest concerns according to Kier.
