LIVE PD Pizza party draws hundreds to Richland County
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - Hundreds of people came out for the Richland County Sheriff Department's pizza party for a meet and greet with deputies features on A&E's hit TV show "LIVE PD".
The documentary series follows six of the country's busiest police forces and airs real time interactions between police and the public on Friday and Saturday nights.
Richland County is one of the departments featured in the show.
Sisters Stephanie and Catherine Tolliver say they drove all the way from Virginia to meet the Richland County Deputies.
"We drove seven hours because we knew that the guys were gonna be here and we think that the deputies on the show are fascinating to watch, and the job that they do is really difficult, and yet they're always way more patient than the rest of us would be," said Stephanie.
Sergeant Kevin Lawrence says he enjoys being a part of the show because it provides a clear, unfiltered vision of what law enforcement agencies do on a day to day basis.
"I never thought it would be this big," said Lawrence. "It's satisfying and it's gratifying to see how many people support us on a daily basis. Again, I'm overwhelmed, and I thank the community for the support."
"In the 21st Century, law enforcement has to look for ways to connect with everyone, but especially our young people," said Sheriff Leon Lott. "And the popularity of Live PD has provided the Richland County Sheriff’s Department with the opportunity to increase our transparency, as well as connect with our citizens on an extremely large scale.”
Department officials said they did not expect nearly as many people to show up, but they are very happy about the turnout.
