Local group honors Prince former drummer, Keenan alum, John Blackwell
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH)-- A group of local musicians gathered Wednesday to honor a very talented Kennan High School Alum.
Last month, former Prince Drummer, John Blackwell Jr. passed away after losing his battle with brain cancer.
In 2011, he received the key to the city due to his drummer career where he performed alongside other greats like Patti LaBelle and Cameo.
In 2016, the drummer returned home to his alma mater, W.J. Keenan High school, for a very special Prince tribute in honor of his legacy.
The Columbia Fireflies plan to honor Blackwell as well with the "Purple Game" at Spirit Communication Park on August 30.
Blackwell was 43-years-old when he passed.
