COLUMBIA (WACH/WNWO) â?? Ottawa County, Ohio Sheriff Stephen Levorchick has confirmed that 17-year-old Paige Widmer of Pelion died in a boat accident on Lake Erie.
According to a Lexington County School District One spokesperson, students gathered at Pelion High School on Thursday afternoon. District officials say they will have grief counselors at the high school on Monday, when students return from Spring Break.
Rescue teams launched a full scale search Thursday morning and say the bodies of two of the four missing boaters have been recovered, both wearing life vests.
Crews located the first body of one boater shortly before 10 a.m. near Niagara Reef by a private vessel.
Hours earlier, crews found the boat, which was carrying a group of four, partially submerged near Toussaint Reef, a few miles from shore.
Officials said they were first alerted to a missing 21-foot bass fishing boat with four people on board around 6 p.m. Wednesday. The group had been fishing near Rattlesnake Island, northeast of Put-In-Bay, during the day Wednesday.
Around 6 a.m., crews were able to locate the boat, partially submerged near Toussaint Reef, approximately five miles northeast of Locust Point, where the group launched Wednesday evening.
Crews continue to search, by air and on water, for two male boaters who remain missing.
The pickup truck and boat trailer belonging to at least one member of the group was found parked at Locust Point.
