Loftis wants info on Haley's budget meeting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has asked Gov. Nikki Haley for details about a meeting with the state's two top budget writers.

Loftis said Thursday he wants an explanation of Haley's meeting on Tuesday with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hugh Leatherman and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Cooper.

Haley, Leatherman, Cooper and Loftis constitute a majority of the five-member Budget and Control Board. State law requires public notice when the majority of a board meets. Loftis and Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom are the other members.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey said the meeting was to discuss the state's Medicaid funding problems and wasn't related to Budget and Control Board matters.

The board meets next week to discuss Medicaid's $228 million deficit.
