COLUMBIA (WACH) -- More than one hundred people huffing and puffing their way up 479 steps at the Capitol Center in Downtown Columbia.
A group of firefighters took part running up the steps while carrying pounds of their equipment.
The event called Fight For Air Climb Columbia was to raise awareness for the millions of people fighting lung disease.
Several of the climbers trained at least three months before climbing all the steps.
We spoke with one fire fighter who says running up hundreds of steps reminds him of the first responders who went into the twin towers on 9/11.
â??We're wearing this gear. When we get up here we get to sit down and take a break. Their carrying extra gear firefighting gear, extra cylinders and when they get up there they got to go to work and just knowing the danger that they were placing themselves in, it really kind of makes you feel for what they went through,â?? says Captain Chris Ballington, Lexington County Fire Service.
Over $30,000 was raised that will help benefit The American Lung Association.
The first place winner was 40 year old Mike Guidotti finishing the climb in just two minutes and twenty-two seconds (2:22).
