COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Richland County deputies arrested a man who is responsible for the death of a man who was shot while holding a 3-year-old child, according to Sheriff Leon Lott.
Deputies arrested and charged Kevin Lewis, 29, with murder in the shooting death of Howard J. Nemley, 25, according to Lott.
Nemley was outside his home at Deer Park Apartments with his friend Eric Salley, 23, on the evening of July 24 when an argument started between two rival gangs, said Lott.
Lott said a group of juveniles -- one from the Deer Park Apartments and the other from Brookside Apartments -- got into an argument. Salley began egging on the two groups to fight, said Lott. A juvenile's mother began speaking to the groups and asked her boyfriend's brother, Kevin Lewis, to come to the scene.
Lott said Lewis came to the assistance of one of the gangs, driving up with some friends in a gold GMC Denali and a green SUV. Lewis and his friends then beat up Salley who ran away, said Lott.
They then shot Nemley, according to Lott. Lott said Nemley ran away but was shot again and died.
Lott said Lewis then gathered his people together and drove away in the two SUVs.
Lott said Lewis and another man were seen minutes before the shooting at an AM/PM store on Parklane Road. Surveillance video of Lewis and the man from that store is shown above.
The sheriff's department is seeking the identity of the other man in the video. Sheriff Lott is offering a cash reward to anyone who can identify the man who was with Lewis at the AM/PM store.
Anyone with information on this man or the other suspects involved in the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
Lewis is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
