COLUMBIA (WACH) - A 24-year-old man is dead after investigators say he shot at Richland County deputies Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies say the shooter is Adam Jurgen. Jurgen was pronounced dead at the scene after an exchange of gunfire around 2:45 p.m.

According to Capt. Chris Cowan, deputy Sheila Aull was shot in the chest. He credits a bullet proof vest with saving her life.

Aull has been with the Sheriff's Department since March 2004 and is currently at the hospital being evaluated.

Cowan says several rounds were fired, hitting patrol cars and cars in The Farrington Apartments complex.

Deputies were called to the area to investigate a fight between a female victim and Jurgen around 1:30 p.m at the CVS on Broad River Road. Depuities say the female was taken to Lexington Medical Center after being assaulted while Jurgen left the scene on foot.

They searched for Jurgen, and after finding him at The Farrington Apartments, several rounds were fired at the deputies, according to Cowan.

Cowan says Jurgen entered the front of one apartment and exited the back of the apartment, and that's when Deputy Aull was hit. At that point, responding deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect.

People in the surrounding area are being interviewed.
