Man gets 20 years for death of USC professor

LEXINGTON (AP) -- A man has been sentenced to 20 years in the hit-and-run death of a University of South Carolina professor.

According to The State newspaper that William Craig Caughman was sentenced Thursday after a jury found him guilty in the death of 36-year-old Toby Morriss.

Prosecutors said Caughman was driving a pickup truck in February 2010 when he made a sudden left turn in front of a motorcyclist, causing a crash.

Caughman left the scene. Morriss, who was on the motorcycle, died several days later at a hospital.

Police say Caughman hid his pickup and cut off its doors. Authorities say Caughman also bought a new vehicle days after the crash.

Morriss was an adjunct photography professor at the university.
