Man gets life sentence in deadly Florence shooting

A 47-year-old Florence man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man who was having an extramarital relationship with his stepdaughter

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- A 47-year-old Florence man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man who was having an extramarital relationship with his stepdaughter.

The Morning News of Florence reports (http://bit.ly/1blJTAD ) that a jury deliberated about three hours Thursday before finding Wayne "Sonny" Scott guilty of murder.

Scott said he shot 50-year-old Steve Springs in self-defense in September 2012 after he had several heated phone calls with Springs. Scott's lawyer says Scott thought Springs was coming over to fight.

But neighbors and friends testified Scott planned to shoot Springs with a high-powered rifle no matter what happened that day. Other witnesses testified Scott was angry about Springs' relationship with his stepdaughter.

Jurors asked the judge about the elements of self-defense three times before reaching their verdict.
