KERSHAW COUNTY (WACH) - A Kershaw County man who was arrested last month for beating his son is facing new charges.
Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said Antonio Green was arrested on August 1 for having a stolen gun.
Matthews says Green was riding in a vehicle driven by 46 year-old Kenneth Qualls.
Matthews said deputies stopped the car and smelled the odor of alcohol and eventually removed Qualls and Green from the vehicle.
Matthews says a 9mm handgun was found by the seat which had allegedly been purchased by Green and Qualls.
The arresting officer determined that the handgun had been stolen in Columbia.
â??Green makes bond for the assault charge and now makes bond for possessing the stolen gun? This situation of offenders being out on multiple bonds has got to stop,â?? said Sheriff Matthews. â??We see this far too often and it is a disservice to the community.â??
Green and Qualls were placed under arrest and charged with possession of a stolen firearm. They were both transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center and have been released on $5,000.00 bond each.
Matthews said Green was drunk and got into an argument with his 12 year-old son over the missing keys.
Matthews said during the argument Green hit his son in the head with the flashlight and his fists.
Investigators said the boy ran for help and a neighbor called police.
Matthews said Green has been charged with 2nd degree assault and battery and a judge set his bond at $20,000.
â??This is a very sad situation. No child should be subjected to this kind of abuse by a parent. Mr. Greenâ??s alcohol problem and the violence it leads to needs to be dealt with before he more seriously injures someone,â?? said Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews.
