Thu, 25 Jul 2013 21:46:10 GMT — COLUMBIA (WACH) - Authorities say a Columbia police officer was forced to fire his gun after being called to a fight in progress at the 4300 block of Woodridge Drive. The call came in around 3:00 p.m. when a group was reported to be fighting outside a residence on Woodridge Drive. According to Columbia Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Timmons, when the officer tried to break up the fight, he was allegedly struck in the head with an object. He then attempted to subdue the suspect at least twice with his baton and OC spray before firing his service weapon. The suspect was struck in the lower body. Timmons says the suspect's injuries are non-life threatening.The officer was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. SLED is investigating the incident according to proper protocol.
