Man shot while holding 3-year-old identified

COLUMBIA (WACH) - The victim of a deadly shooting in an apartment complex off of Two Notch Road has been identified.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Howard J. Nemley, 25, of Firelane Road, Columbia

Richland County deputies said the shooting happened around 9 p.m. when two groups of young men got into an argument in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Watts said Nemley was shot multiple times in the upper body.

Police say Nemley was holding his three-year-old daughter when he was shot, but the girl was unharmed.

"He actually was holding his daughter in his arms when we got to him, so someone came and got his daughter and got her away from his body," said witness Jeremy Johnson who lives at the complex and went to the parking lot when he heard the shots. "So we just stayed by his body, and I was checking his pulse to see if he was still breathing, and he had a pulse, but it slowly faded away."

Investigators are questioning witnesses to find out who shot the man.
