COLUMBIA (WACH)- Wednesday February 19, 2014 marks the 69th anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of the second world war. A group of retired Marines gathered in Cayce to observe the occasion. Three active duty Marines were there as well.
Joining them was 92-year-old Bob Hughes. He is one of the few veterans of that battle who is still living.
For five weeks between February and March 1945, U.S. Marines fought Japanese troops for the strategically important island. Between the two sides, there were more than 25,000 casualties. The following video is Hughes in his own words.
