COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)--Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin took part in his annual Meals on Wheels delivery Thursday.
The mayor dropped off food to an elderly woman at her home near Two Notch Rd. It is part of a national campaign for mayor's that are delivering food. Benjamin is trying to bring health awareness as well as companionship to those who need it.
"They worked, they labored hard decade after decade," Benjamin said. "This fine woman has lived in her home for 57 years working to contribute to the quality of life we all enjoy here in Columbia now. We are making sure she is able to get a healthy, nutritious meal everyday; and making sure she gets some company."
According to Meals on Wheels, the Palmetto State ranked second in the nation for seniors with food insecurity back in 2010. But with new efforts, the state went down to eight in 2012.
