Mayor to abusers: Your days are numbered

Over 1000 people joined to walk against domestic violence on Saturday at Finlay Park

COLUMBIA (WACH) â?? Mayor Steve Benjamin, members of the Columbia City Council and more than 1,000 community members gathered at Finlay Park Saturday morning to create awareness and send a message to abusers that their â??days are numbered.â??

"It's important," says Mayor Benjamin, "for the community to come together to say that abuse is not love and everyone needs to know that we are standing side by side with victims."

The annual walk, led by the mayor, provides a forum for increasing awareness about domestic violence, and the resources available to help victims.

Statistics show that one in four women have experienced domestic violence in her lifetime. According to the

October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The latest report by the Violence Policy Center in Washington shows that South Carolina ranks second nationwide in the rate of women killed by men.
