South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster says 20 people have been indicted as part of a fight against gangs in one town near the coast.
McMaster announced the indictments during a news conference in Walterboro. He says the 19 adults and one juvenile face charges ranging from perjury and obstruction of justice to arson and murder.
Walterboro has seen a number of violent incidents recently, including a drive-by shooting in November that killed three people, including a 20-month-old toddler, and wounded six others.
State Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie Lloyd planned to speak to reporters later Wednesday. His agents have swarmed into the area in recent months because Lloyd said the area had been taken over by thugs.
